Class Syllabus
In my classroom, we will have language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and religious studies. Here is a breakdown of the major components for each subject:
Language Arts
Spelling lessons are taken from math, science, and social studies with a midweek trial test and a Friday test—always in sentence form. The class will work on phonics and handwriting practice. The English text and interactive notebook will be used for grammar and punctuation. The Writing Process helps with composition. Home reading logs, a word wall of “bonus vocabulary words, the reading text, and news reports help with reading comprehension.
Mathematics
The mathematics text and interactive notebook will be used. The class will concentrate on whole number operations, measurements, long division, multiplication, geometry, and probability. There will be cooperative projects and activities that allow students to practice and reinforce math concepts. Math assignments, a word wall of mathematical vocabulary words, and hands-on activities will help support learning.
Science
We use the science text, newspaper articles, and other science books along with any television programs and videos that present themselves from time to time. There are some good experiments in the text that we’ll incorporate. The curiosity of the students will also guide us in our science class. There will be a science fair project which I’ll tell you more about when the date is set.
Social Studies
The social studies text, along with classroom maps, atlases, and globes will be used. News articles that we find from time to time will add to the class. We’ll do surveys with accompanying graphs on social studies themes. Each student will also have a workbook.
Religion
The religion class will emphasize spirituality, Catholic social teaching, the commandments, prayer and faith. The class will follow the text consisting of small projects and quizzes throughout the year. The interactive notebooks will have writing reflections, vocabulary words, and personal art work that will engage students.
Other Notes
Students work is sent home every three weeks with and accompanying form to sign. Homework is given Monday through Thursday only. Bottled water and a healthy snack are permitted. Small pencil backs are necessary due to lack of space in the desks. No toys at school, please. Lastly, if you have any questions, problems or concern please let me know. I want to make this a wonderful year for everyone!
